Nothin' But Blue Sky

Japanese racing seems to have a new star in the shape of Deep Sky, who followed up his win in the NKH Mile Cup (Jap-I), by producing a blistering finish to land the Japanese Derby.
Deep Sky is by Agnes Tachyon. A son of the almost inevitable Sunday Silence, Agnes Tachyon scored his most important triumph in the Japanese Two Thousand Guineas (gr. I). He's made a promising start to his stud career with 15 stakes winners in his first three crops, including other grade I winners Daiwi Scarlet and Logic.
The TrueNick A rated Deep Sky is out the Chief's Crown mare Abi, and at this point we have to own up to some personal involvement in the pedigree. We were involved in the private purchase of Abi's dam, Carmelized, for the English-based Devonia Stud, and for the mating which created Abi (it gave a 4 x 3 inbreeding to Miss Carmie, the third dam of Chief's Crown, and granddam of Carmelized). Abi's clever mating didn't avail her much on the track, as she recorded just a maiden win, but blood has told in her career as a producer.
As a footnote, we recall that a later clever mating between Carmelized and a son of Danzig - Danehill, who gave inbreeding to the brothers His Majesty and Graustark - gave us Royal Dragon, winner of three group races including the German Two Thousand Guineas (Ger-II).
