Storm Cat's well-bred son Bernstein made a very good start to his career.
From a first crop sired when he stood at Doug Arnold's Buckpond Farm, Bernstein was represented by just 37 foals, of which 32 have started and 26 have won. Five of these captured stakes events, their number being headed by the Astarita Stakes (gr. III) victress Toll Taker; the Providencia Stakes (gr. III) winner Berbatim; and Rugula, a stakes winner who also ran second in the Fantasy Stakes (gr. II).
Bernstein had only 29 foals from his second year at stud, 43 in his third, and 47 in his fourth, but has added two stakes winners apiece from each of those crops.
Bernstein's current crop of 2-year-olds -- the first conceived after his promising first season, and his move to Castleton Lyons -- paints him as a prototypical rebound stallion. This year, he's already been represented by 17 2-year-old winners, and they include Doremifasollatido, winner of the Matron Stakes (gr. II), and West Side Bernie (TrueNicks A+), who took the Kentucky Cup Juvenile (gr. II).
