Reader Q&A -- Rate the Pedigree Nick Between A.P. Indy and Gone West

Question:  Alan, what do you think about Sons of AP Indy to daughters of Gone West?

Alan Porter's response:  To date the A.P. Indy (TrueNicks,SRO) /Gone West nick -- and the more general Seattle Slew/Gone West nick -- has not been a very successful one.

There is only one stakes winner on an A.P. Indy/Gone West from around 24 starters -- Bertsgoldenmissile, a son of Golden Missile out of a Gone West mare, who won the Gate Dancer Stakes at Louisiana Downs in October -- and only two others by other Seattle Slew-line stallions.

As A.P. Indy is good with Mr. Prospector in general, one suspects that this is a good pedigree cross that doesn't work well physically. In such cases, the cross sometimes does better with the principals a generation or two further back. A.P. Indy's dam does have Bold Ruler and Tom Fool, a pairing that is very good for Gone West, so it might be that sons of A.P. Indy will work better with mares by sons of Gone West.

I don't think a sample size of 1 is sufficient to draw any conclusions.  If there were 2 stakes winners, that wouldn't be so bad.  3 would be excellent.  Reliable data isn't sensitive to such tiny changes in value that can literally depend on the wrong horse getting colic or stepping on a rock at the wrong time.  The data isn't completely meaningless, but it's really, really close to meaningless.

Phenotype and genotype need to work hand in hand.

Alex,

I would agree that 1 stakes winner from 24 starters doesn't form the basis of a statistical conclusion (that's why TrueNicks doesn't create a rating based on the A.P. Indy/Gone West cross). However, we can say that we are not seeing great promise considering the class of the horses involved (it may be that with some of A.P. Indy's sons, such as Pulpit, Malibu Moon and Mineshaft being out of Mr. Prospector mares, breeders have been reluctant to try them extensively over Gone West and other Mr. Prospector lines).
