Reader Q&A -- Pedigree Nicks with Barbadian Thoroughbred Bloodlines

Question: Hi Alan.  My named is Trevor. I have a mare in foal to a Mujadil son named is Toby's Dream.  His dam is Islandagore (Indian Ridge - Dancing Sunset, by Red Sunset).  My broodmare is Nostalgia she is by Nosferatu (a son Vice Regent) and her dam is Azallya (by Habitat). The pedigree is the same as Kingsgate Native.  Is it a good nick, Alan?

Alan's responseThank you for your question, Trevor. Both Toby's Dream (IRE) and Kingsgate Native (IRE) are by Mujadil out of Indian Ridge (IRE) mares. Mujadil has sired four stakes winners (including two group winners) out of Northern Dancer-line mares, but his success/opportunity rate with Northern Dancer-line mares has not been exceptional, and the cross is TrueNick rated D.

Kingsgate Native is a little more interesting, as his granddam is bred on the Northern Dancer/Habitat cross, as is Nostalgia. Mujadil is by a son of Northern Dancer out of a mare by Secretariat (half-brother to Sir Gaylord, the sire of Habitat) and that could help.

Hey Alan,

It is Barbadian and not Bermudan bloodlines in the headline.

  • Scot's reply:  Right you are -- the email came from Bermuda but the bloodlines are from Barbados.  (Headline updated.)  Thanks for the comment.

Would you please comment on the influence  in breeding-( or line breeding) to Northern Dancer and Nasrullah in Stallions pedigrees.

  • Scot's reply:  I asked Alan to comment on your question -- look for his reply in a post next week!

Alan, first of all your blog has been very helpful to  me.  I have two fillies that have been racing this year that plan to be bred.  I live close to Ellis Park (Henderson, KY) and I was wondering if it would be more beneficial to board the mares in Indiana (with their rising purses) or in Kentucky if I am planning to sell the foals?  Thanks

  • Alan's reply Thanks. This is a little outside my area of expertise, but it does appear that the regional programs are becoming more and more attractive, especially if you are breeding below the very top commercial level.

My understanding is - looking at the Indiana Thoroughbred Breeders website - that to be a registered Indiana-bred a mare has to be either in state and register by November 1, or if not, will have to be bred to a registered Indiana stallion (that would be for the 2009 season), but since they are maidens you don't have a foal to 2009 to be concerned about.

I believe an option to consider would be breeding the fillies to a Kentucky stallion this coming year, and then sending them to Indiana before November 1, to having an Indiana-bred by a Kentucky sire in 2010. You would then have the option to breed the mare in Kentucky again the following, if my understanding is correct (you can check into this at www.itoba.com).

Of course, Kentucky has some incentive programs of its own, although, naturally the competition is somewhat tougher.
