Cherokee Run and Rahy -- A Blushing Groom Nick

I was a little intrigued last year when Kafwain (TrueNicks,SRO) was represented by stakes winner (and subsequently graded-placed) Kadira. She is out of a mare by Rahy (TrueNicks,SRO) , and since Kafwain is by Cherokee Run (TrueNicks,SRO) , Kadira is the result of a Blushing Groom/Blushing Groom cross.

Now -- as I've often said -- breeding a sire back over a mare from his direct mail line tends to have a below-opportunity outcome (unless other factors are present). What's more, stakes-winning Blushing Groom/Blushing Groom crosses are very rare; literally less than a handful exist (although Kafwain has a second, a story for another day).

Anyway, a look at the protagonists in Kadira's pedigree, Cherokee Run and Rahy, offers an explanation as to why they might have combined successfully. Cherokee Run is by a son of Blushing Groom out of a mare by a son of Drone (grandson of Turn-to), and Rahy is by Blushing Groom out of a mare by Halo (grandson of Turn-to). Drone and Halo are in fact close genetic relatives -- both by sons of Turn-to out of mares bred on a Pharamond II/Mahmoud cross. Along with Sir Ivor and Stop the Music, they form a quartet that all work with each other.

I still wouldn't expect to see many Cherokee Run/Rahy or Rahy/Cherokee Run crosses, but a very practical use for the combination struck us the other day while doing some mating work. There are a growing number of stallions out of Rahy mares, beginning with Giant's Causeway (already sire of classic winner Footstepsinthesand out of Blushing Groom-line mare, and with several sons at stud), and also including his brothers, Freud and Roar of the Tiger (TrueNicks,SRO) ; After Market (TrueNicks,SRO); Even the Score (TrueNicks,SRO) ; Grand Reward (TrueNicks,SRO) ; Harlington (TrueNicks,SRO); and Posse (TrueNicks,SRO) . All of these look well worth trying with mares carrying Cherokee Run.

PREDICTION--IT WILL TAKE LEWIS MICHAEL TO MAKE RAHY A TRUE SIRE OF SIRES!

NEVERKICKYOURDOG 05 Jan 2009 10:44 PM

I'm glad to see this focus on Rahy, who I have followed since watching my beloved Serena's Song.  He has sired some wonderful filles , and believe his niche will be a damsire. I find the Cherokee Run angle interesting, and was a fan of his when he was running.  The torch is being passed to Lewis Michael, but I think that Grand Reward and Harlington will be fun to watch as well- since they are sons of Serena's Song.  Thanks for the interesting article

Alan,

Since I have Kafwain here at Hurstland this coming year, I appreciate your breeding insights. Due to the amount of Nasrullah and Nearco in Kafwain's pedigree, what do you think about adding more Princequillo on the dam side to balance the Nasrullah out?

Also, with Hatchet Man in the pedigree, what about bringing in Foggy Note through Relaunch as a balancing factor for The Axe II?

Sorry, it took a while to work my way round to this one.

You would have to think that Princequillo would be a good influence, given how well he worked with Nasrullah (and that Nearco/Prince Rose is good in general), and the predominance of those strains in Kafwain.

Relaunch might be interesting. The Axe II turned out to be a very influential horse. More of his sire Mahmoud can't hurt with Nasrullah either.

Dear Mr. Porter, what do think about a Housebuster mare named Bull Buster (99) to cross with a blushing groom line stallion!

Dear Mr. Porter

We have a Cherokee Run daughter still racing, she is from a Seattle Slew dam. What is your opinion of Cherokee Run as a broodmare sire? She is correct and has a good race record though not stakes placed.

Cherokee Run as a broodmare sire-

Cherokee Run has so far been broodmare sire of six stakes winners, none of them graded. It's not an exceptional performance, but it is interesting that there are already some marked trends.

Two of the stakes winners are by Lemon Drop Kid (I think they may be the only starters on the cross); two are by sons of Carson City (Five Star Day and City Zip), which gives inbreeding to Blushing Groom; another is by Freud (again inbreeding to Blushing Groom, and via Rahy). The other is by War Chant.

My feeling is that he is not a broodmare sire that I would be seeking, but that if I had a nice broodmare prospect by him, I would not be dismayed. It also looks as if he is a horse who is likely to be particularly helped by the right mating.
