The European pattern race season kicked into gear Saturday with the Prix Exbury (Fr-III) for 4-year-olds and up
over 10 furlongs at Saint Cloud. The winner was Court Canibal (GB), a Montjeu
(IRE) colt who has obviously improved significantly in his third year of racing, since his
most notable effort last term was a third in the Deutsches St. Leger (Ger-III).
Out of a
mare by Arazi -- a disappointing sire, but now considerably redeeming himself as a
broodmare sire -- Court Canibal is rated A+ by TrueNicks on the Montjeu/Blushing
Groom (FR) cross.
Also worth a quick word here is the Exbury third, Chinchon (IRE) (by
Marju (IRE) - Jarama (IRE), by Hector Protector), who was beaten just a length and a nose. He is
by a grandson of Try My Best, and his third dam, Northern Prancer, is a sister
to Try My Best. Chinchon has run several good races, including a fifth in the
Prix du Jockey Club (Fr-I), without gaining stakes honors, and we think a pedigree as
clever as this deserves a good win!
