Runaways Run Away From the Field

The Runaway Groom branch of Blushing Groom (FR) had a very useful weekend. Runaway Groom's son Najran was represented by the third graded winner from his first crop when Wasted Tears took the Ouija Board Distaff Handicap (gr. IIIT). Proving herself a true daughter of her sire -- who equaled Dr. Fager's world record for a mile on dirt -- Wasted Tears smoked the eight panels in 1:32.81. She's TrueNicks rated B+ and out of a mare by  Greinton (GB) (by Green Dancer), which was particularly satisfying for us, as we recommended Greinton as a potential good cross for Najran in our stallion report on this horse.

By the way, Najran is advertised by Hopewell Farm at $7,500 for the current season, which with three first-crop graded winners on the board looks value.

Runaway Groom's champion sprinter Cherokee Run (TrueNicks,SRO) was represented by the Alcatraz Stakes winner Run It, who is out of a Theatrical mare (IRE) and rated A++.

Meanwhile, Runaway Groom himself was represented by Sterwins (a mating planned by the TrueNicks developers, and one that Trates A+), who scored by a head over last year's champion turf horse in Canada, Rahy's Attorney, in the Connaught Cup (gr. IIIT) at Woodbine, while setting a new 8 1/2-furlong course record of 1:38.99.

Runaway Groom is my desktop picture, i have always admired him and it is so rewarding to know that he as a sire was so right.

Everytime I see him in a pedigree I put a couple bucks on the horse, at least to place or show.  I usually win.  He is the dams sire of horse #2 in the Gamely Stakes this weekend.  I'll put a couple bucks on Bel Air Sizzle to show.

I watched Runaway Groom win the Queen's Plate in person and watched him win the Travers on TV against the three triple crown winners that year which I believe were Gotta Del Sol, Aloma's Ruler and Conquistao cielo (probably spelld them wrong).  That was an awesome win as it didn't look like he had a chance.  He was always a very underrated horse and was always a good stallion.

A very underrated and underappreciated sire. There should have been a lot more done with him. What a stunning horse!!!

One of my favorite 3 year olds this year is Kelly Leak, a son of Runaway Groom. Kelly Leak won the Sunland Derby that so many nice horses have come out of. Too bad he was not triple crown nominated. I expect good things from him down the road.

Presented here are two mares that are similarly-priced, with stakes-winning dams and a couple of foals on the ground. So which one is the better deal?

Combining Runaway Groom in a pedigree with a couple of Mr. Prospectors may be a good strategy.

Runaway Groom’s grandson Yonaguska is out of a Mr. Prospector line mare, and when teamed up with more Mr. P on the female side – creating inbreeding to Mr. P - he’s produced a number of good runners, including Musket Man (Mr. Prospector 4x4).   A couple of Yonaguska’s recent racing prospects also have inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.  His $485,000 Midlantic sales youngster – half brother to this year’s Derby winner - has Mr. Prospector 4x3.    An impressive 7 length maiden winner just yesterday at Belmont is by Yonaguska out of a Distorted Humor mare (Mr. Prospector 4x4).   Yonaguska/Mr. Prospector gets a True Nicks score of A.

Like Yonaguska, Najran also carries the Runaway Groom/Mr. Prospector cross.    While Najran’s daughter Wasted Tears does not have a second Mr. P, she does have Raise A Cup, a horse bred like Mr. P.    Mr. Prospector and Raise A Cup appear 5x4 in Wasted Tears.

The Runaway Grooms may enjoy a double dose of Mr. Prospector.   But who doesn’t?  As reported in Close Encounters (BloodHorse Market Watch; February 2009), there are already 150 graded stakes winners having duplications of Mr. Prospector.

I have a young mare with Runaway groom/Valndingham cross that I bred to Artie Schiller.

Any thoughts on that cross, I am just getting started with true nicks!

Great Product!
