Brave New World -- Sons of Sunday Silence Continue Legacy

One of
a number of sons of Sunday Silence battling to establish themselves as
the true heir to their sire is Shadai Stallion Station's Neo Universe (JPN). With his first-crop 3-year-olds, Neo Universe is sire of
Unrivaled (JPN), who took the Japanese classic Satsuki Sho (Jpn-II), and of
Logi Universe (JPN), who lost his unbeaten record with a disappointing effort in the same race but rebounded at the weekend to win the Tokyo Yushun (Jpn-II) classic.
The Satsuki Sho is Japan's version of the Two Thousand Guineas. The Tokyo Yushun is also known as the Japanese Derby.
Perhaps it's not surprising that Neo Universe should make this kind of
start. He won six of his first seven starts including both the Guineas and
Derby equivalents. Those efforts seemed to take their toll, as Neo Universe
didn't win again in four starts at 3 (although he did take two thirds and
two fourths), and he added the Sankei Osaka Hai (Jpn-II) on the first of his
two starts at 4.
Out of the Kris (GB) mare Pointed Path (GB), Neo Universe (TrueNicks A++) is from
what can now claim to be a stallion family, as his granddam, the group-placed
Silken Way (FR), is half-sister to Waterway (FR), a French group winner who was also
third in the classic Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Fr-I). Waterway is dam of Gilltown Stud Irish Oaks (Ire-I)
heroine Helen Street (GB), dam of Street Cry (IRE) -- now firmly established as one of the
best young stallions in the world -- and granddam of the exciting young stallion
prospect Shamardal. The female line is a Weinstock/Sobell (Ballymacoll Stud) family going back to the mare Sunny Gulf (GB) and brought into Ballymacol by the
purchase of the bloodstock of the estate of Dorothy Paget (whose mother was a
member of the Whitney family, and who is probably best remembered as the owner of
the legendary steeplechaser Golden Miller).
Interestingly, Unrivaled comes from the same Sunny Gulf family as
his sire. His fourth dam, Sunland (GB), is half-sister to Neo Universe's fifth dam,
Sunny Cove. (The relationship is actually a little closer as Sunland is by
Charlottesville (GB), and Sunny Cove is by Charlottesville's broodmare sire,
Nearco (ITY).) Unrivaled's dam is the Sadler's Wells mare Ballet Queen (IRE) (a sister to
the ill-starred Three Chimneys Dewhurst Stakes (Eng-I) winner Prince of Dance). Ballet Queen
has been a stellar producer, and is dam of two other black type winners
including Japanese Derby winner Fusaichi Concorde (JPN) and granddam of three other
stakes winners including another Satsuki Sho winner, the Brian's
Time colt, Victory (JPN).
Logi
Universe is the first foal of Acoustics (JPN), a Japanese foaled daughter of Cape Cross (IRE), a son of the Danzig stallion Green Desert. Acoustics is a half-sister to
Japanese stakes winner Not Alone (JPN) (by another Sunday Silence horse, Agnes
Tachyon (JPN)), and is out of a mare by Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry from Neo
Universe's family). The third dam, Nureyev's daughter Sonic Lady, was a
brilliant miler in Europe where she captured the Swettenham Stud Sussex Stakes (Eng-I), Goffs Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I), and Prix du Moulin de Longchamp Ecurie Fustok (Fr-I). Sonic Lady subsequently
produced three stakes winners; the Blushing Groom (FR) group winners Sharman and
Hazaam, and Dubai stakes winner Mudallel (GB), a brother to Logi Universe's second
dam.
