Still Lucky, In Kentucky

The juvenile filly grade I races over the weekend (including Friday) both went to stallions who made their names in a regional market before moving to Kentucky.

The Frizette Stakes (gr. I) went to Devil May Care, who was making only her second start. She is by Malibu Moon (TrueNicks,SRO), who initially started very cheaply in Maryland, and out of Kelli's Ransom (by Red Ransom), also the dam of this year's U. A. E. Derby (gr. II) and Super Derby (gr. II) victor Regal Ransom. Both were Pedigree Consultants recommended matings for Diamond A Farms, and we had a client try and purchase Devil May Care at auction at two, but she went beyond the budget.

Devil May Care (rated A++ by TrueNicks) is from the third Kentucky crop sired by Malibu Moon (one at $10,000, then two at $30,000). At least seven of the first Kentucky crop are stakes winners, including graded scorers Raw Silk, Luna Vega and Sweet August Moon. There are six more stakes winners from the second Kentucky crop, including CCA Oaks (gr. I) winner Funny Moon and graded winer Sara Louise. Incidentally, the above mentioned are all fillies, and while we don't think that Malibu Moon is necessarily a "filly sire" as he's had male winners at grade I (Champion Two-Year-Old Declan's Moon), grade II and grade III levels, they have all been geldings, which makes us wonder if he might suit smaller or lighter-framed mares.

The Alcibiades Stakes (gr. I) on opening Friday at Keenlenad went to Negligee (by Northern Afleet (TrueNicks,SRO) , who began his life at stud in Florida). Northern Afleet is enjoying a career year and is currently seventh on the leading sires list. His other representatives this season include the ill-fated Dubai Golden Shaheen (gr. I) winner Big City Man. Negligee is out of Naughty Notions, a daughter of Relaunch, and Tara's Charmer, a Majestic Light mare who is closely related to Wavering Monarch. Northern Afleet clearly has an affinity for the In Reality line in general, as he has three stakes winners out of In Reality line mares, with Big City Man being out of a daughter of Valid Appeal.
