Family Rules

Out of the Silver Deputy mare, Silvery Swan, El Corredor (TrueNicks,SRO) (by Mr. Greeley (TrueNicks,SRO)) was the second grade I winner inbred to Mr. Prospector when he took the 2000 edition of the Cigar Mile (gr. I). He was also the first notable runner with such inbreeding to retire to stud and he quickly dispelled fears that his pedigree pattern would inhibit his career. To date, El Corredor has sired a grade I winner in each of his three crops (and on dirt, turf, and all-weather).

He also quickly put to rest the notion that three crosses of Mr. Prospector or Raise a Native would not work for him, siring Wanna Runner, a graded winner of over $650,000 out of a mare by a son of Mr. Prospector, and graded stakes winner Itty Bitty Pretty out of a mare by Raise a Cup (a Raise a Native son who is three-quarters related to Mr. Prospector).

Now comes El Corredor’s brother Roman Ruler (TrueNicks,SRO) , who is by Fusaichi Pegasus (TrueNicks,SRO), a son of Mr. Prospector and bred on a very similar pattern to El Corredor. Roman Ruler ranks as the #2 freshman sire in North America.

Roman Ruler has had plenty of runners, 62 of his juveniles having started to date with 28 already being winners (second behind only Wildcat Heir (TrueNicks,SRO) for individual winners). More importantly, he is already showing that he can get considerable class. Earlier this year his son, Homeboykris, took the Champagne Stakes (gr. I), and on Friday night, another Roman Ruler colt, Rule, followed up a spectacular win in the Jean Lafitte Stakes, with a game win in the Delta Jackpot Stakes (gr. III). In addition, Roman Ruler is also sire of Barretts Juvenile Stakes winner Seattle Ruler, Mexican grade I winner Zacatlan, and three stakes placed horses, including the Breeders’ Futurity (gr. I) third, Roman Invasion, and Connie and Michael, who took third in the Miesque Stakes (gr. III).

So far, Roman Ruler’s best runners have been produced by less aggressive strategies. Homeboykris (TrueNicks A++) is out of One Last Salute, who is by the Hoist the Flag horse, Salutely, and is inbred to Ribot. The Ribot strain has combined quite well with Native Dancer (due to some deep pedigree ties), and Roman Ruler has four Native Dancer crosses. She also brings in Maribeau, a half-brother to Halo (in Roman Ruler’s sire), and out of Cosmah, a half-sister to Almahmoud, the dam of Northern Dancer (twice in Roman Ruler).

Rule is out of Rockcide, a Personal Flag half-sister to Funny Cide. Interestingly enough, Hoist the Flag also appears here, this time as sire of Personal Flag’s dam. Rockcide also has Seattle Slew (often good with Mr. Prospector) through Slewacide, the sire of her dam, and is inbred to Buckpasser. Seattle Ruler is out of an A.P. Indy (TrueNicks,SRO) mare (TrueNicks A+) and so is bred on the same cross as the talented Ravel (by Fusaichi Pegasus out of an A.P. Indy mare). Overall, Seattle Slew looks as if it might be a beneficial influence here.
