Papa Clem (TrueNicks,SRO) was among the favorites for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) last year after an impressive spring campaign. He ran second in a pair of grade II Derby preps, the Robert B. Lewis S. (to Pioneerof The Nile) and Louisiana Derby (to Friesan Fire) before taking center stage in the grade II Arkansas Derby (now a grade I). His handy win at Oaklawn came at the expense of Old Fashioned and eventual Classic winner and Champion Summer Bird. Papa Clem placed second in the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) in late December before finishing up his career with another graded win in the San Fernando Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita. He earned over $1.1 million.
A son of two-time leading sire Smart Strike, Papa Clem’s first two dams were both grade I winners in California. He is out of the Belong to Me mare Miss Houdini, winner of the Del Mar Debutante (gr. I) in 2002. She is a daughter of the Lord Avie mare Magical Maiden, winner of the 1991 Hollywood Starlet (gr. I) and the 1992 Las Virgenes (gr. I), etc.
