He Ain't Heavy...

While his brother Giant's Causeway (TrueNicks,SRO) has been ruling the roost – he was Leading Sire of 2009, and currently leads the table again this year – Freud (TrueNicks,SRO) has quietly been making his way towards the head of the stallion ranks in New York. He’s so far sired 17 stakes winners and 35 stakes horses (for a number approaching 20% stakes horses to starters), and passed and important milestone on April 8, when his daughter Franny Freud became his first U.S. graded scorer with a nearly five-length tally in the Beaumont Stakes (gr. II).

The three-year-old filly is out of the D’Accord mare Frankly Fran and is TrueNicks rated A++, the Storm Cat cross with mares by D’Accord having also produced graded I winner D’Wildcat, graded stakes winner Wandering, and stakes winner Kate’s Main Man. These four stakes winners come from just 29 starters by Storm Cat and his sons out of mares by D’Accord. Looking at the pedigree, it’s no surprise that Storm Cat and D’Accord combine so well together. Storm Cat is by Storm Bird (by Northern Dancer), out of a mare by Secretariat, and D’Accord is by Secretariat, out of Fanfreluche, a daughter of Northern Dancer (an bred similarly to Storm Bird). The supply of D’Accord mares is likely to be drying up, but it’s certainly worth keeping an eye out for opportunities to combine him (or his brother, Medaille d’Or) with Storm Cat elsewhere in the pedigree. By the way, here, Frankly Fran’s family adds another twist to the equation. Her third dam, Maimiti, is by Never Bend, a son of Secretariat’s grandsire, Nasrullah, out of Hula Girl, whose dam, Imperial Hill, is a three-parts-sister to Somethingroyal, the dam of Secretariat.

Coincidentally, the Beaumont third, Diva Delite, is also by a New York-based stallion, and inbred to the Northern Dancer/Bold Ruler cross. Diva Delite, who had won her five previous starts, the most recent of which came in the Florida Oaks (gr. III), is by Repent (TrueNicks,SRO) , a son of Louis Quatorze (TrueNicks,SRO) who started in Florida, stood in Kentucky, and is now in New York. Repent is a horse who seems to particularly repay clever matings, and Diva Deputy is an example. She is out of a mare by Tour d’Or, whose sire, Medaille d’Or is by Secretariat (Bold Ruler/Princequillo cross) out of Fanfreluche, who is by Northern Dancer. Louis Quatorze is by Sovereign Dancer, a Northern Dancer/Bold Ruler cross (the opposite of Medaille d’Or), and Louis Quatorze himself is also Northern Dancer/Bold Ruler, his Bold Ruler being through Bold Lad, a Bold Ruler/Princequillo cross like Secretariat.
