1997 was an amazing year for handicap horses. Some of the fastest horses of the last 20 years were part of that division, including Skip Away, Gentlemen, Siphon, Sandpit, Alphabet Soup, Will's Way and Formal Gold. And on his best day, Formal Gold was probably better than all of them, save maybe Gentlemen. Formal Gold finished ahead of champion Skip Away 4 times that year, and concluded his career with 3 straight 124+ Beyer speed figures.

I believed he was robbed that year and should have been named Handicap horse of the year.

There were a couple of years in a row where the best older horse didn't get the honors - Formal Gold was the standout in 1997, and although he was carefully placed, Awesome Again was unbeaten at four, and defeated one of the best Breeders' Cup Classic fields there has been.
