This week we are profiling some interesting first crop offerings at the upcoming Fasig-Tipton July Yearlings sale. Click here for a complete list of Fasig-Tipton July TrueNicks reports.
Hip# 10 – Stevie Wonderboy – Bojangle's Cat, by Tabasco Cat (TrueNicks B+)
Champion Two-Year-Old Stevie Wonderboy (TrueNicks,SRO) owned an intriguing pedigree in his own right, with Weekend Surprise 3 x 3 through A.P. Indy (TrueNicks,SRO) and Summer Squall (his broodmare sire). We’ve always been keen on his pedigree with Storm Cat, a three-quarters genetic relative to Summer Squall. This one is out of a mare by Tabasco Cat, whose own broodmare sire, Sauce Boat, is from the same Missy Baba family as A.P. Indy and Summer Squall. There have already been three stakes winners, two graded, on an A.P. Indy/Tabasco Cat cross, including this year’s Florida Derby (gr. I) victor, and Kentucky Derby (gr. I) second, Ice Box. Hip# 23 – Bob and John – Confederate Lady, by Dixie Union (TrueNicks A)
Seeking the Gold has shown himself to be a what we’d call a very useful “minor sire of sires” including Petionville (TrueNicks,SRO) and Mutakddim (TrueNicks,SRO). This year there are two well-bred Seeking the Gold sons in Bob and John (TrueNicks,SRO) and Jazil (TrueNicks,SRO) – who achieved something that no other Seeking the Gold colts had previously achieved, a first past-the-post in a U.S. dirt grade I – will have their first yearlings. This particular mating struck us as a fascinating pedigree. TrueNicks rated “A”, and with the broodmare sire, Dixie Union (TrueNicks,SRO) giving line breeding to Mr. Prospector, Northern Dancer, and Seattle Slew (through Capote and his three-parts-sister, My Song for You, the granddam of Bob and John.
