Pedigree Time Machine: Relaunch

With the La Jolla Handicap (gr. II) set for this Saturday at Del Mar, featuring Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Sidney's Candy, let's take a brief look at the 1979 La Jolla winner – Relaunch.

The three-year-old Relaunch won three starts at Del Mar during the month of August, 1979 – first was an easy five-length win in a 8.5-furlong turf allowance; one week later was the La Jolla Mile Stakes (gr. III); and, two weeks after that, was the 9-furlong Del Mar Derby Handicap (gr. III), where he led throughout to win by 4 ½ lengths.

Relaunch was sired by In Reality, winner of the Florida Derby and Met Mile, but primarily a source of speed at stud. Relaunch may have taken more after his dam, Foggy Note, who was also a speedy turf horse excelling up to and slightly beyond one mile. In addition to Relaunch, Foggy Note is ancestress of Rubiano, Glitterman, Tapit (TrueNicks,SRO), Summer Bird (TrueNicks), and Life At Ten in direct female line. Foggy Note's sire (Relaunch's broodmare sire) was the distance-oriented The Axe II, 1963 Champion Grass Horse in Canada and member of the great La Troienne family.

At stud, Relaunch became a source of precocious speed, but his progeny showed the ability to stay classic distances with added maturity. Relaunch sired notable sons Skywalker, Waquoit, Honour and Glory, With Anticipation, and Cee's Tizzy – the sire of Tiznow (TrueNicks,SRO).

Relaunch also became one of the leading broodmare sires. His daughters have produced grade/group I winners Ghostzapper (TrueNicks,SRO), City Zip (TrueNicks,SRO), Forever Together, Stellar Jayne, Starrer, Passing Shot, House Party, Pure as Gold, Ad Valorem (TrueNicks,SRO), and Negligee.

The Relaunch line of In Reality may be the saving grace for this sire line that goes to Man O'War.  Tiznow is doing fantastic and his sons are sought after as sires.  I only wish Tizbud would be brought to Kentucky and given a shot at better mares.  Two sires from the same line is better than one.  Tiznow is out of range price wise for alot of breeders.  Tizbud would breed 100 mares at $10,000.  One can dream ????

Ran three times in August.  You never see that anymore.

Seems to me Relaunch was in Spectacular Bids' Derby and also became noted as a sire of off track runners. Just off the top of my head. How does he stack up against The Bids progeny?

Leon,

In 1980, Relaunch ran 3rd to Spectacular Bid in the San Fernando (gr. II), then 4th (and last) to him in the Strub (gr. I) after setting the grueling pace that helped Spectacular Bid set the world record for 10 furlongs.

Relaunch was a very successful sire and broodmare sire, and generally a much better pedigree influence than Spectacular Bid. Bid's legacy is on the racetrack.

I do believe these horses were running on NO medication.  Could it be?  No medication and three races in three weeks, boy the horses of today are pitiful.

As I recall, Relaunch suffered a bowed tendon, but returned later to win more stakes. So, I wouldn't characterize him as an "iron horse" by any means. Apparently, the rigors of racing did get to him...Also, it seems that most now take it as a given that today's horses are far less durable/sound than in years past. Those top horses of yesteryear did tend to make more starts, but that in  itself offers little evidence for the less durable assumption. There are many variables to be considered, not least is the advent of The Breeders' Cup. I don't read where any are suggesting that the european horses of before, or now, were/are equally less durable. Take a look at the lifetime starts for many of Europe's finest, now and before.

I neglected to add: Racing was never a kind occupation for the racehorse.

A horse I have always admired and enjoy reading about his bloodlines going forward.
