Kingmambo: a Great Sire

This week it was announced that Kingmambo (TrueNicks,SRO) has been pensioned from stud duty. To date, the 20-year-old son of Mr. Prospector and dual Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. I) winner Miesque has sired 86 stakes winners, including 23 group or grade I winners on the flat.

Kingmambo stood his entire career at Lane's End in Versailles, Kentucky. His first season at stud was 1994, when his fee was $45,000. From here his value soared. Kingmambo was soon covering mares for $200,000, and from 2005-06 his published fee was a staggering $300,000.

Will Farish of Lane’s End called Kingmambo “one of the great stallions of all time," and who could argue? Kingmambo consistently sired sprinters, milers, classic winners, and stayers at the highest level, and his progeny have earned over $95 million.

Kingmambo has several sons at stud to continue his sire line, including these TrueNicks stallions:

Kingmambo's full brother Kitalpha (TrueNicks,SRO) is also at stud in Kentucky after a promising start in Zimbabwe.

The table below lists Kingmambo's 23 grade or group I winners. Also included are are the TrueNicks ratings for each cross. Sadler's Wells appears as broodmare sire of six of Kingmambo's gr. I winners, but yet the TrueNicks rating is only C+. The reason for this has to do with the number of times the cross has been tried. Kingmambo has 102 foals of racing age out of Sadler's Wells mares, for 79 starters, 47 winners, and eight stakes winners. While the strike rate is only slightly better than average, when the cross has worked, it has often resulted in a stakes winner at the highest level. We discussed this phenomenon in a Kingmambo/Sadler's Wells blog post nearly three years ago.

Kingmambo has been a smashingly great sire, as well as  race horse.  I hope his difficulties with the neck does not hamper his retirement and prevent him from having a happy 10 more years or so!

what happens to him now... is he going to old friends or maybe the kentucky horse park...

nmh,

I expect he'll be happy and well cared for at Lane's End. They have other pensioners there, such as 32-year-old Lord Avie, who sherpa brought to our attention earlier this week on the Princequillo blog.

Just to demonstrate how tuff this stallion predicting game can often be- I recall visiting Lanes End during Kingmambo's and Miner's Mark's initial season at stud. I was familiar with both as runners, and after inspecting them was fairly certain that Miner's Mark would prove the better sire. History has shown that I couldn't have been more mistaken. I've never forgotten that visit (and conclusion), and it has tempered my opinions ever since...I was accompanied that day by my close and wise friend, the late Bob Falk. He and I had usually agreed about new stallions, but Bob was rather sure that Kingmambo would become a good one ( and not Miner's Mark)...Lastly, appreciate seeing the photo credit for racing's all-time best conformation photographer, Tony Leonard. Tony's still with us, but in dire straits. His great talent deserves to be remembered.

Of course the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was taken out by Workforce, a son of King's Best out of a Sadler's Wells mare. King's Best has done better than his own sire with Sadler's Wells mares (Workforce is a B+) but then King's Best is a three-quarter-brother to a mare named Urban Sea who had a horse named Galileo by Sadler's Wells so there might be a little more at work there.

Kingmambo has been a successful sire; however the jury is still out on whether or not he will become successful as a sire of sires.

It is interesting to see how particular stallion lines thrive in one country yet fail in another. In Japan, a son of Kingmambo called King Kamehameha is doing exceptionally well, so far having sired 24 Stakes performers (4 Group winners, 3 Listed winners).  However in Australia four stallions sired by Kingmambo including King's Best, Okawango, King Cugat and Dubai Destination have been complete failures.

Recent Group 1 winners - Workforce and Richard’s Kid sired by King’s Best and Lemon Drop Kid have thrown the spotlight back onto the Kingmambo sire line, however overall these stallions have been disappointing.

There is still hope for Kingmambo and I believe this lays with a well bred stallion called Henrythenavigator.  If this stallion fails, Kingmambo’s chances of being a successful sire of sires will look very grim. His influence will rest through his daughters.

In the current climate where Northern Dancer and Mr Prospector dominate pedigrees, we are still searching for the new stallion that will bring a new dominate line to the fore globally
