Free TrueNicks Reports for Travers Stakes

Complimentary TrueNicks Enhanced reports are available for the Travers Stakes (gr. I) field listed below. Click on the horse's name or letter grade to view the report. Each cross's average winning distance is included in the table—see the full report for addition cross-specific stats.

The two favorites, Stay Thirsty and Coil, are sired by Travers winners Bernardini (TrueNicks,SRO) and Point Given (TrueNicks,SRO), respectively. Both sires romped in their Travers wins, Bernardini in 2006 (video) and Point Given in 2001 (video).

Travers contender Moonshine Mullin is by Albert the Great (TrueNicks), who nearly held on to win the 2000 edition (video) but was caught in the final strides by Unshaded. Belmont (gr. I) winner Ruler On Ice is by Roman Ruler (TrueNicks,SRO), third behind Flower Alley (TrueNicks,SRO) and Bellamy Road (TrueNicks,SRO) in the 2005 Travers (video).

Redemption is a powerful force and I think that Jose Valdivia has to have the ride of his life on the front end from the 4 post.    Lets face it if Dialed In or Animal Kingdom were in the Travers, thats who we all would be betting on and the fact that they are not leaves only one horse with a monster late kick and that is Ruler On Ice not Stay Thirsty after winning the Jim Dandy and not racing anyone.    Ruler On Ice gets to the front ,he is gone.

My son Coil will win the Travers.Probably the first Father-Son combination to win the Haskell and Traver.Run well my boy.

Point Given 25 Aug 2011 3:32 AM

See you at the winner's circle.

Point Given 25 Aug 2011 3:34 AM

Point Given,

Wow, what an honor having you comment on the blog. I didn't realize you had internet access.

Ian Tapp,

If there's a will, there's a way. Thx for the red carpet welcome.

Point Given 25 Aug 2011 10:52 AM

Point Given, can you provide me with insight on Coil's attributes?

JerseyTom 25 Aug 2011 11:49 AM

Jersey Tom,

He's never met his son. He's a domesticated horse. He impregnated Coil's mom when she visited the farm and never saw her again.

Point Given,

It has already been done - Forty Niner & Coronado's Quest both did the Haskell/Travers double....if Coil gets it done you and Thunder Gulch would join Alydar, Easy Goer and Will's Way in a Travers sireline trifecta also.

Byron Rogers 25 Aug 2011 12:07 PM

Point Given - while I too think Coil is the horse to beat in this year's Travers Stakes, he will not be in the first father-son winning pair.

The most recent was 2009's Summer Bird whose sire Birdstone won in 2004 proving his Belmont win was no fluke.

But you were the son of a Father-Son winning pair.  Thunder Gulch won in 1992, so you could be in a Grandfather-Father-Son trifecta.

Lmaris 25 Aug 2011 1:27 PM

(internet connection went down so not sure post went through so reposting in different form)

Not 1st father-son winning pair.  Not even first pair in your family, nor are you 1st Grandfather-Father-son trifecta

Summer Bird (2009) & Birdstone (2004)

Point Given (2001) & Thunder Gulch (1995)

Coronado's Quest (1998) & Forty Niner (1988)

and others...

Trifecta:

Will's Way (1996) & Easy Goer (1989) & Alydar (1978)

Umm, what's all the fuss about Coil being by Point Given? Not that I have anything against Point Given (I don't), but isn't it still prudent to look at the bottom half of a pedigree?

Coil will probably get my $2, but not because of his sire. His dam is by Theatrical, and Theatrical, imo, walks on water.

Sandy Snider 26 Aug 2011 8:27 PM

Hi Sandy,

You're right to look at the bottom half as it's certainly equally as important as the top half. However, we concentrate on sires because they are statistically much easier to quantify (they sire more foals than mares produce). Also, breeders have greater access to stallions. Many can breed a mare to Point Given per season, but to acquire Eversmile (Coil's dam) for breeding purposes would be a much more complex proposition, with a max of 1 foal per season.
