Time Has Told

Over two years ago, we ran a TrueNicks Broodmare Report for the O'Reilly (NZ) (TrueNicks) mare Rare Insight. The report was ordered by Rare Insight's part-owner Neil Hoar, who gave a copy to his trainer, leading Australian trainer John O'Shea. After reading the report, the trainer told us: "I'm impressed that the report has Danehill Dancer as a top pick. I have the Danehill Dancer 2-year-old out of the mare and I think she goes very well."

The unraced 2-year-old filly O'Shea referred to, which was rated A+ at the time, is now the 4-year-old filly Steps In Time, who made her way into group stakes company over the weekend in Australia by impressively winning the New South Wales Thoroughbred Breeders' Classic (gr. II, 1200m) at Warwick Farm.

While a group/graded stakes winner is a career-maker as far as a mare is concerned, Rare Insight had a rather tough start to her career as a broodmare. After delivering a dead foal by premier stallion Redoute's Choice (AUS) (TrueNicks,SRO) in her first season at stud, she missed on her subsequent covering to Viscount. Her first live foal, a magnificent colt by Fastnet Rock (AUS) (TrueNicks,SRO) that fetched $800,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, subsequently became a wobbler and never raced. Steps In Time is the first foal out of the mare to make it to the racetrack. After ordering the TrueNicks report, plans were made for Rare Insight—a talented racemare in her own right, and from a very solid family that has been nurtured by the Chittick family's Waikato Stud in New Zealand—to return to Danehill Dancer on the back of the early promise of Steps In Time. However, Coolmore decided that year to no longer shuttle the premier stallion to their farm in Jerry's Plains, so the decision was made to return the mare to Lonhro (AUS) (TrueNicks,SRO), a stallion she had been bred to in late 2009.

Her 2009 covering resulted in a grand-looking colt, a TrueNicks A+ mating, that is now a yearling heading to the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale next April where he is offered by Kitchwin Hills. Rare Insight's 2010 covering also resulted in a Lonhro colt, which is now a foal by the mare's side. Following that colt, Rare Insight visited Redoute's Choice, an A++ mating, with Neil Hoar and the rest of her owners looking forward to seeing what will be a three-quarter-relation to the group II-winning Steps In Time. It may have been a rough start for this mare, but a series of well planned matings may yet see her stud career become one of note.
