Coming off a 10.45% increase in average and a 20% improvement in median at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale, vendors at that company's Saratoga Yearling Sale, scheduled for Aug. 5-6, will be feeling optimistic. The upward trend in prices may be less welcome to buyers seeking value, but by way of compensation there is an awful lot of quality to choose from. Here we'll just take a brief look through at sire's offspring that are out of a graded winners, or siblings to graded scorers.
The first foal of graded stakes winner Century Park is a daughter of Arch (TrueNicks). From the first crop of Arch's champion older horse son Blame (TrueNicks) is a filly out of graded scorer Garden District, making the filly a product of the excellent Roberto/Dixieland Band combination. Blame's colt out of Kivi is a half brother to Nearctic Stakes (Can-IT) and Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IIT) captor Regally Ready, and is linebred to Sadler's Wells and his three-quarter sister Bound. From the first Kentucky crop of leading freshman sire Congrats (TrueNicks) is a half sister to graded scorer Lady of Fifty.
Distorted Humor (TrueNicks) has an intriguingly-bred three-quarter relative to Canadian champion A Bit O'Gold, who is not only bred on a strong nick, but also has the siblings Mr. Prospector and Red Ryder 3x3. Bred on the tremendously productive Distorted Humor/A.P. Indy cross is a Distorted Humor half brother to two-time champion Royal Delta.
There are not going to be too many more opportunities to buy a Dynaformer yearling, and the one out of A.P. Indy daughter Indy Pick is a half sister to the near-millionaire Optimizer. Padmore has produced a trio of stakes winners, including German group II winner King of Sydney. Here she has a colt by Elusive Quality (TrueNicks) who is a brother to multiple stakes winner Barracks Road.
Sale yearlings by Europe's dominant classic sire Galileo are relatively rare, but here he has two right out of the top drawer. One is the first foal of French One Thousand Guineas (Fr-I) heroine Elusive Wave, and the other a half sister to grade I winner Magnificent Song.
By champion racehorse and sire Giant's Causeway (TrueNicks), the colt out of Half Queen is a half sister to champion 2-year-old filly Halfbridled. Another from the Storm Cat line, Harlan's Holiday (TrueNicks,SRO) has graduated from value-for-money standout to a serious commercial sire with such as Shanghai Bobby, Into Mischief (TrueNicks), and Majesticperfection (TrueNicks,SRO). He has a half brother to multiple graded stakes winner Carmandia from the family of Kentucky Derby (gr. I)-placed Closing Argument (TrueNicks,SRO).
Kitten's Joy (TrueNicks) has 13 stakes winners so far this year, and there is a brother to one of the graded scorers, Hal's Hope Stakes (gr. III) winner Csaba. The late Indian Charlie, a very good sire of fillies, has a daughter of graded scorer Alpine Gardens. That one is out of a Mr. Prospector line mare—Mr. Prospector being a great foil for Indian Charlie—and the same can be said of the filly out of the Miswaki mare Greyciousness, also dam of rocket-fast The Factor (TrueNicks). On a different cross is the Indian Charlie filly who is the first foal of graded scorer Jody Slew, a daughter of Slew City Slew. Indian Charlie's filly out of Mini Chat is a half sister to Dixie Chatter (TrueNicks), who took the Norfolk Stakes (gr. I), and also a sister to speedy graded scorer Rumor.
The Lemon Drop Kid (TrueNicks,SRO) filly out of Danehill's daughter Silken Sash is a half sister to graded winner Raw Silk (by a son of A.P. Indy, who in turn is a three-quarter brother to the dam of Lemon Drop Kid), and also has Nureyev and his three-quarter brother Fairy King 4x3.
Malibu Moon (TrueNicks)'s offerings include a filly out of grade I-winning Acey Deucey, a mare who has already bred a stakes winner by Pulpit, a horse bred very similarly to Malibu Moon; a half sister to graded winner Sweet Hope; the first foal of Necessary Evil, who defeated colts in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship (gr. III); and a brother to $700,000 earner Prospective.
Medaglia d'Oro (TrueNicks) initially made his name with his daughters, but his current 3-year-old crop includes the stakes-winning colts Violence (TrueNicks), Rydilluc, Micromanage, and Crop Report, and he also has a colt here who is a half brother to graded winner Giant Moon, and a colt out of grade I winner Stop Traffic, who is a half brother to Cross Traffic.
Leading second crop sire Midnight Lute (TrueNicks,SRO) is sire of a half sister to grade II winner Sky Cape, who is linebred to the Mr. Prospector/Vice Regent cross. Sprint champion Orientate (TrueNicks,SRO) has a sister to one of his best offspring, the three-time grade I-winning Intangaroo. Pioneerof the Nile (TrueNicks) is off to a promising start and has a filly with an international background, as she is out of German Oaks (Ger-I) winner Silvester Lady.
We mentioned a Malibu Moon three-quarter relative to a Pulpit stakes winner, and positions are reversed with the Pulpit colt out of Fun Crowd, who is very closely related to Malibu Moon's CCA Oaks (gr. I) victress Funny Moon. Twice leading sire Smart Strike (TrueNicks) is represented by the first foal of Molly Pitcher Stakes (gr. II) winner Luna Vega as well as a daughter of three-time graded winner Roshani.
Street Cry (TrueNicks)'s son out of Bethany is bred on an identical cross to that stallion's grade I-winning sprinter Here Comes Ben, but is also a half brother to Tizway (TrueNicks,SRO) and Ticket to Seattle. Street Boss (TrueNicks,SRO), a multiple grade I-winning son of Street Cry, has a colt who is the first foal out of three-time graded scorer Miss Isella.
This is the first Tapit (TrueNicks) crop conceived at a fee as high as $80,000 and includes a daughter of multiple graded score Bending Strings; a colt bred on an international cross out of the U.S. graded-winning Galileo mare Dress Rehearsal; a half brother to this year's Spiral Stakes (gr. III) scorer Black Onyx; a daughter of Matchmaker Stakes (gr. IIIT) victress Love Match; and a daughter of Santa Maria Handicap (gr. I) laureate Sugar Shake.
Tiznow (TrueNicks) is one of the most reliable sire of classic distance dirt horses, and the colt out of A.P. Indy's daughter She's A Winner is a half brother to a classic performer in Bluegrass Cat (TrueNicks,SRO), as well as to graded winner Lord of the Game and graded stakes-placed Cal Nation (TrueNicks,SRO). The late Unbridled's Song (TrueNicks,SRO) has an interesting one in the shape of the first foal out of Old Hat Stakes (gr. III) winner Richiegirlgonewild, this one having the three-quarter related Unbridled and Pentelicus 2x4.
Finally, those looking for a potential broodmare are going to be intrigued by a filly from the first crop of Warrior's Reward (TrueNicks) out of Smolensk, a group II-winning and group I-placed daughter of Danzig and Blush With Pride.
