The Aga Khan Stars Also Shine

Wednesday, October 07, 2009 2:31 PM

Sea the Stars has rightfully dominated the headlines from Europe but the other story of the weekend was the remarkable performance of horses bred and owned by the Aga Khan. We'll start with the 2½ mile Prix du Cadran (gr. I), which went to Alandi (TrueNicks A ), who is by Galileo out of the stakes winning Darshaan mare, Aliya, and is one of no less than five... A Juvenile Weekend

Wednesday, September 23, 2009 1:47 PM

There were several stakes for juveniles last weekend and two freshman sires, Kitten’s Joy (who also had the Summer S. (gr. III) runner-up Becky’s Kitten) and Roman Ruler ( TrueNicks , SRO ) put stakes winners on the board. Oh Canada

Monday, September 21, 2009 9:21 PM

A lot of the key North American action was focused in Canada this weekend. The most valuable race of the weekend was the $1,000,000 (Canadian funds) Woodbine Mile (gr. I), which was taken in storming fashion by the five-year-old mare Ventura (TrueNicks A++ ). She is a reminder of just how severe a loss the premature death of her sire, Chester House was. He sired... Another Weekend, Another Runaway Filly

Wednesday, September 02, 2009 2:45 PM

Last week we wrote that Careless Jewel had put up a Rachel Alexandra-like effort in crushing the Alabama Stakes (gr. I) field. Fast forward a week, and we find four-year-old Icon Project, delivering her Personal Ensign Stakes (gr. I) rivals a 13½ lengths drubbing. Icon Project (TrueNicks A++ ) is the second grade I winner and one of eight total stakes winners... Read More...

Tied Together -- Birdstone, Medaglia d'Oro, and Musket Man

Tuesday, May 05, 2009 10:38 PM

Several recent posts inspire us to take a quick look at some similarities -- perhaps coincidental -- between the pedigrees of Birdstone ( TrueNicks , SRO ), Medaglia d'Oro ( TrueNicks , SRO ) , and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) third Musket Man . As we've mentioned ( here ), Birdstone's sire Grindstoned is out of a mare by Drone (whose half... Read More...

Derby's All Mine

Monday, May 04, 2009 4:36 PM

Squeezed back as the field left the stalls and way off the pace early on, Mine That Bird -- under a rail-skimming ride from Calvin Borel -- ran past a rubber-legged field in the stretch to take a muddy renewal of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) by 6 3/4 lengths. The $9,500 yearling -- the least expensive in the race -- Mine That Bird was Canada... Read More...

Researching a Smart Pedigree

Thursday, April 23, 2009 8:40 AM

Surprisingly, the richest race of the past weekend wasn’t one of the graded contests. Instead that honor went to the inaugural Charles Town Classic, a nine-furlong contest with a purse of $500,000. The winner, who more than doubled his lifetime earnings, was the Two Smart (by Two Punch) gelding Reseacher . This was the sixth win in his last seven starts for Researcher... Read More...
